The Evolution Of Software Patches
By Remy Na
Software patches can provide much-needed computer repair solutions. The word ‘patch’ is derived from the time-consuming methods employed by end users to resolve problems with software in the early history of the computer.

The Early Days of Software Patches

Back in those days, computer data was stored on tape or even cards with small holes that were inserted into the hardware or mainframe. Engineers and suppliers of these early pieces of hardware and software provided fixes for computer repair in the form of strips of tape or card that could replace the offending code by the end user. The user; provided he or she had the expertise to do so, would have to “patch” in the solution manually in the appropriate region of the medium. It was not unlike the process used by the analog film maker who patches together two strips of film in the editing suite so that one scene or shot moves seamlessly to the next.

This method was obviously prone to lots of trial and error. If even the smallest step was missed or the solution medium was patched in the wrong place, it usually meant having to do the whole job all over again. In the early days, the manuals weren’t exactly well documented because people were still writing the rule-book about dealing with computers. As technology improved and got smaller, with removable drives and the benefits that came with them, patches evolved in the form of floppies, tapes, and disks that could be sent by software manufacturers and developers through snail mail.

Software Patches Today

Today, the software patches employed in computer repair can usually be downloaded from a manufacturer’s website. Often, they download automatically via the Internet. Most of the time, you would not even notice when a piece of software has been patched. If you require a fix for your software, the best place to look first is the software developer’s web site to see if a patch is available for the problem. You will be brought through the process after downloading the patch so that the patch can be installed if it doesn’t do so automatically. Often, a wizard will guide you through the necessary steps to make sure that the computer repair is complete.

Patches today come in the form of small binary executables or source code. They have various functions, like providing computer repair for glitches, bugs and errors. Patches can improve software performance and speed up processes. They can improve user-friendliness, enhance interfaces and ensure the smooth running of an unstable application.

The word patch can suggest a bandage or a medical dressing – and sometimes patches do help to heal. You’d be completely wrong if you thought using software patches for computer repair would
